Pacific League News
Seibu Lions
■First round draft pick pitcher Hideaki Wakui left a good first impression in his Spring Training Game debut. "Matsuzaka the 2nd" as some people are calling him, pitched 2 shutout innings against the Softbank Hawks on Feb. 27, and was able to shut down powerful hitters like Kenji Jojima. He got high marks from an Orix scout, "I can't think of him as a high schooler. I'm gonna look at him as a reputable foe from now on."
■Will the Lions be up for sale soon? For those of you who haven't been following what's been going on with Seibu, and one of the former richest men in the world Yoshiaki Tsutsumi, you can get up to date with this article from The Japan Times. Apparently this news had a direct affect on the Lions as they got pounced on that day by the Hanshin Tigers 13-3. Invoice Inc., which has the naming rights to Seibu Dome (Invoice Seibu Dome) as well as Seibu's farm team, said in a statement on Mar. 3rd that they would buy the team if asked to by Seibu. Seibu bought the Lions from Crown Lighter in 1978, and since that time, won 9 Nippon Series champioinships. Seibu's parent company Kokudo, threw out the possibility of selling the team last year, but withdrew the offer when there was little interest due to a high asking price. Seibu said earlier this year that they would take another long look at selling the team off after the season, but I don't know if the Executive Committee would approve a sale mid-season.

Softbank Hawks
■Second year infielder Kenji Akashi was diagnosed as having a light sprain in his left shoulder on the 2nd, after complaining about pain the previous day during the game against the Chunichi Dragons. He will need at least 5 days of rest, and then the coaches can decide when he can rejoin the team after that. Akashi spent most of his time with the farm team in 2004, batting .304 in 81 games.
■Pop singer Fumiya Fujii produced a new song for the Hawks, entitled "To the Skies of Victory" (shouri no sora he), and he will sing it during a pre-game ceremony at the Regular season home opener on Mar. 26 at Fukuoka Yahoo! Dome.

Nippon Ham Fighters
■The Fighters officially announced the signing of former Boston Red Sox minor league pitcher Brad Thomas on Feb 28th. He was given a 1 year contract worth 45 million yen.
■What would the news be without something about Shinjo? Well, he's changed his theme song to Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train", but it didn't have the desired effect he was hoping for, as he went 0-3 in the first game where he used it, on Mar 3rd at Sapporo Dome.

Lotte Marines
■Want to learn to speak Hawaiian? Outfielder Benny Agbayani, who was born and raised in Hawaii, might be offering a daily "Conversational class" at Chiba Marine Stadium. It has yet to be confirmed, but the plan would be for a specific phrase to appear on an electronic viewing screen (details on location weren't given) before gametime, teaching the Japanese people useful phrases in Hawaiian, like Aloha and Mahalo. Benny explained "Aloha" as equivalent to the Japanese konnichi wa (good afternoon), and "Mahalo" as the equivalent to arigatou in Japanese (thank you). There is also talk about playing video of Hawaii everytime Benny steps up to the plate.
■When the Marines take on the Rakuten Golden Eagles at Chiba Marine Stadium to open up the PL Season on March 26 and 27, A limited edition stamp sheet, along with a commemorative "Welcome bento" (lunch box) will be on sale, only for these two games. The lunch box will include foods that are popular in both Chiba and Sendai. The stamp sheet will consist of ten 80 yen stamps, featuring playing shots from both clubs, along with face shots, and team logo designs.
■When the Chiba Lotte Marines played the Pusan Lotte Giants from Korea for two games in Kagoshima, together they raised over 1.2 million yen for the Sumatra Indonesia Tsunami and Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake relief fund.
■The Chiba Lotte Marines also announced they are in the planning stages to add an additional 1,000 seats along the first and third base lines of Chiba Marine Stadium for the 2006 season. The club is supposedly using Kobe's Skymark Stadium (formerly Yahoo! BB Stadium) as a model for the field level seating. The club expects construction costs to be around 270 million yen, and if the idea is approved, construction will take place from October of 2005 until February 2006.

Orix Buffaloes
■Pitcher Yuuki Tanaka made his first mound appearance against another team in almost 3 years during the March 2nd win over Lotte. He spent the past 2 years on the DL rehabilitating from a shoulder injury in his pitching arm. He went 4 innings, giving up only 1 hit, 0 runs, and striking out 4.
■Orix will be holding a special baseball school in Osaka Dome after the pre-season game against the Hanshin Tigers on March 21. The event is geared towards elementary school children from the 3rd to 6th grades, and will cost 2,000 yen per participant. Various players from the Orix Buffaloes are scheduled to participate,

Rakuten Golden Eagles
■Rakuten to have the most beautiful toilets? According to Nikkan Sports, Fullcast Stadium Miyazaki is aiming for the most beautiful toilets in Japan, with the janitorial staff cleaning them out twice daily. The article states that when you enter the bathroom, there'll be pictures of animals for the children, and the toilet seat covers will have various designs and colors on them.
■Former Daiei Hawks pitcher Matt Skrmetta signed a one year deal with the Eagles. In 2003 he went 1-1 with 11 saves and a 3.86 ERA in 16 games for the Hawks, and will start off with the Eagles' farm team..

Central League News
Chunichi Dragons
■The Dragons will be giving away mini calenders to the first 10,000 people to show up for the home opener series from 4/1 - 4/3 at Nagoya Dome, along with special random giveaways including cheering uniforms to 1,000 people, Dragons hats to 1,000 people, and magnets featuring the Dragons mascot to 1,000 people.
■The Dragons announced a couple of special events for home games at Nagoya Dome this season. One will be a chance for 5 lucky youngsters before each game to view the Dragons pre-game practice from the 1st base dugout, another will be a chance for up to 30 elementary or middle school children to make their own glove (actually just lacing up the leather parts), and a "Lucky 7 Dance Time" event where 9 youngsters will be selected to go onto the field and dance with the Dragons cheerleaders during the 7th inning stretch.

Yakult Swallows
■Last years Rookie of the Year, pitcher Ryo Kawashima, will be starting off the season with the farm team. His right shoulder is still bothering him enough so that the pitching coaches think he should spend time with the farm team until he is ready. The plan is to pitch 3 games at the farm team level, and then join the pro team around the end of April. Masanori Ishikawa is still rehabilitating with the farm team, so that leaves only Dicky Gonzalez, Shuugo Fujii, Yuhei Takai, and Katsutoshi Ishidou for starters. Yakult is currently looking into acquiring another foreign pitcher, or using one of the long middle relievers last year for another starter.
■Third baseman Akinori Iwamura is looking to improve on last years Spring Training stats, by taking "4" titles this year instead of just the 3 titles like he did last year. Including batting (.429), HR's (7) and RBI's (20), he's also looking to take the stolen base title as well. He says he can't gaurantee he'll play in every inning, but he stated he'll appear in all of the Spring Training games. For the regular season he says he's aiming for the triple 3 of .300, 30 HR, and 30 SB.
■Alex Ramirez, known for his post-HR performance for the cameras and fans, hinted at a new act he'll be doing after hitting a HR once games start at Jingu Stadium. Yakult has their first Pre-season game at Jingu on Mar 15th against Rakuten. He didn't exactly say what the performance would be like, and the only hint he gave out was: "Hai, Hai"...
■So who exactly will be the catcher once "The Man" Atsuya Furuta retires or decides to reduce his playing time? Well manager Tsutomu Wakamatsu is going to let potential replacements battle it out, with the winner getting trained personally by Furuta. Currently Yakult's backup catchers consist of Ryouhei Kawamoto (4th round draft pick), Kousei Ono (.175, 1HR in 29 games in 2004), Masakazu Fukukawa (.238, 0HR in 22 career top level games), and Tomohito Yoneno (.063, 0HR in 15 games in 2004). Right now things don't look too good for the Yakult's future.
■Yakult announced that for all 3 games of the home opening series against the Chunichi Dragons (Apr. 5-7, Jingu Stadium, 18:20) , all of the seats will be half price. The most expensive seats around home plate will be 2,250 yen, and the cheapest seats in the outfield bleachers will be 750 yen. A childs outfield seat will only be 250 yen. Also, the first 10,000 people to each of the 3 games will recieve a mini Swallows calender, and a small heat pad.
■In addidition to the half price tickets and give-aways at the home opener series, fans will also have the chance to participate in a special "Predict Atsuya Furuta 2,000 Hits Quiz", where selected winners who correctly predicted the date on which Furuta reaches the 2,000 hit mark will receive limited edition goods signed by Furuta, a pass to participate in the special "2,000 hits achieved ceremony" where 1 lucky fan will get to pass the flowers directly to Furuta, and 1,000 people will receive a pair of box seat tickets to a future Swallows game at Jingu Stadium.

Tokyo Giants
■Giant rookie pitcher Hitoshi Miki made a sparkling debut, pitching 4 innings of 2 hit ball against the Rakuten Golden Eagles. Manager Tsuneo Horiuchi commented, "For a rookie he sure has a sense of stability. He looks like he'll be effective. His face looks really calm, but he's got a real fighting spirit."
■There were plenty of articles featuring popular first baseman Kazuhiro Kiyohara and his brand spanking new diamond earrings. He is apparently the first Japanese player to pierce both ears, and he supposedly modeled himself after Barry Bonds when doing so. Reports are saying that Kiyohara spent 2 million yen for the pair of diamond earrings.

Hanshin Tigers
■Taiyou Fujita made his first appearance with the team ever since having an operation on his right elbow in 2003. After going through 2 years of rehabilitation, he took the mound to start against Orix on Feb 27th, and threw innings of no hit ball.
■When Inter-League play starts in May, the Tigers will be bringing back some old uniforms that they wore 25 years ago. The uniforms will supposedly be worn during the 18 home games of the interleague games. After the Inter-League games are finished, the uniforms will be auctioned off for charity.

Hiroshima Carp
■Hiroshima has signed Dominican infielder Esterlin Franco to a 1 year contract, worth 5.3 million yen. Franco came out of Hiroshima's Dominican Baseball Academy, and will wear uniform number 96. He entered the academy in 2002, and moved to China to play baseball for the Guangdong Leopards in 2004, and took the HR and RBI titles. He has participated in Spring Training with Hiroshima since the beginning of February. You can see Esterlin's picture on this page from the Hiroshima Carp official homepage.

Yokohama Baystars
■Outfielder Hitoshi Tamura picked up right where he left off last year, by homering. After hitting 40 HR's last year, tops for a Japanese player in club history, in the first Spring Training game, he homered twice against the Yakult Swallows, once after getting the green light from manager Kazuhiko Ushijima on a 3 ball 0 strike count.
■Stadium work is pretty much done at Yokohama Stadium, where the fences along the infield seats were taken down to bring the fans closer to the players and the field. Total construction costs for the fences and other areas of the stadium came to 10 million yen. Security guards will be increased, and so will stadium announcements for fans to watch out for stray baseballs.

■If you're a member of the Yokohama Baystars fan club, then you'll get the chance to see the Interleague games at Yokohama Stadium for half price. All you have to do is show proof that you're a member of the Yokohama Baystars fan club when purchasing tickets, and you'll recieve the discount.

Misc. News/Specials
■I mentioned this concept a while back about fans voting online during the game, but here's a little more detailed report:
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/csm/20050301/ts_csm/obasuboru_1
■Softbank is offering the opportunity to view pre-season games played at Fukuoka Yahoo! Dome over the internet free of charge, here's how you can view them:
-First of all, go to the Softbank Hawks Official Homepage,
-when game time comes, click on the banner near the top with the words "LIVE!" in a red bubble next to a satellite dish picture.
-Next, click on the "100K", next to a small TV icon, in a yellow colored text box.
*Windows Media Player is necessary
*Those with connection speeds below 100K will not be able to view the game, though you may be able to hear the audio.
(sometimes the connection is up before game time starts, but the link from the homepage doesn't appear until the game actually starts, so you can also try from the game schedule page, and click on the blue hyperlink in the middle, then the blue link on the right, above the empty box score, and lastly the "100K" link.)

That's all for this week, the next NEWS report will be up March 11.

Post  RE: 2005 Japanese Baseball
Pablo from California here. I'm a huge baseball fan and San Diego Padres season ticket holder. I'm going to be in Japan in early April and I plan on catching some games. I make it over for business once or twice a year and always try to catch some games. I even tried J-League Football last trip and liked it. I've been to Yokohama the most and also to Jinju to see my favorties the Swallows and also to the Tokyo Dome to see the Ham Fighters. I like the Swallows because a few years back they came to Arizona for part of Spring Training and also because I like Shinjuku.

I'll be in the Tokyo area Thursday April 7 thru Saturday April 9 and after looking at the schedule I plan to catch probably 2 of the 3 following games:

Thursday April 7: Chunichi Dragons at Yokohama BayStars
Friday April 8: Chunichi Dragons at Yomiuri Giants
Saturday April 9: Nippon Ham Fighters at Chiba Lotte Marines

I could flip-flop the April 8 and 9 games too.

I've been to Yokohama Stadium a bunch of times (terrible stadium but it's close to where I'll be) so I'm all set there.

But I have a couple of questions about the other two games:

1. I'll be in Shinjuku Friday night. How difficult/long is it to get from there to Chiba Marine stadium? I want to go root against Bobby Valentine who I never could stand!

2. I would love to see a Giants game but I read where it is hard to get tickets. I have always just walked up and scored great seats for every NPB game I have ever been too, usually Field level infield right down close. Is it possible to get a ticket to a Giants game early in the season, especially on a Friday or Saturday? If not, what are my options?

Does anyone want to hook up and catch a game?

Thanks for any help.

Pablo

From Shinjuku station it will take you about an hour on the trains. Just hop on the Chuo line headed towards Tokyo, and transfer to the Keiyou line at Tokyo station.

A Giants game on a weekend is pretty hard to get tickets at the gate. Not impossible, but don't get your hopes up, especially if they are playing last years CL champs. If you wanted to be safe about it, you should try and buy tickets the same day you arrive in Japan, or visit one of the many discount ticket shops around Shinjuku station to see what they have for sale.

Thanks for the info BBJ. Also thanks for all the info you're posting.

I do remember seeing those ticket shops when I walked from Shinjuku Station to my hotel last trip. I think they mostly sold concert tickets but I'll check for Giants tix. It's usually a lot easier to score a single. You called them "Discount" shops. Would the tickets really be discounted or do these brokers charge way over face value? With the terrible yen-$ exchange rate and the already high price there's only so much I want to pay.

Do you know if it's legal for people to sell extras in front of the game at the stadium (i.e., scalpers)? I remember doing that at a sold out West Ham-Chelsea game in London and being politely told by a local policeman that it was illegal, even though right after that I ended up getting a ticket a face value from someone who overheard him talking to me and had an extra.

Thanks again for the help. This site is great.

Concert and movie tickets are in abundance at the ticket shops, but I've occaisonally seen tickets for sporting events there. There might not be any, seeing as how close to game day you're coming, and the Giants game won't be a "big draw" like some of the inter-league games will. It wouldn't hurt to check, who knows, you might just get lucky and find that last ticket at a good price.

Quote:

Haha, legal? No. Carried out? Yes. The Japanese call them Dafuya, or pretty much ticket scalper. You'll see plenty of them on your way to the stadium, and I'm sure they'll stand out. Look for short old guys, totally out of place, sometimes even with short curly permed hair. (Say "Hey, I like your Punch Perm", and then watch them chase after you) You can even see signs outside Tokyo Dome before game time telling you not to buy tickets from these guys.
disclaimer: It is illegal to buy tickets from scalpers hanging around stadiums.

Now, I bought a ticket from one of these guys to a Nippon Ham Fighters game way back, and I got to see Ichiro for only 800 yen. If worse comes to worse, this might be your only option. Try playing the dumb gaijin and see how much you can lower the price down.

I'm pretty good at playing the dumb tourist part! I'm not sure that gets a lower prices since all scalpers want is to make as much ¥ as possible. Scalpers are scum here in the States and everywhere else.

I'll probably just try my luck and get to the stadium early and try to get lucky. The thing is, I really don't want to sit up in the nose bleed seats, especially since if I remember right the seats are really far away from the field. I can try to talk my uncle about getting tickets too, but I know he'd go all out and probably spend a stupid amount to get the absolute best seats in his role of typical Japanese 'Super Host'.

BTW, what's a "Punch Perm"? I've seen a few Japanese guys (usually older) with perms and universally they look ridiculous to me. I don't have enough hair left to perm so who am I to make fun of their hair anyway!

General NPB News

Pacific League News
Seibu Lions
■Can Lions stay focused in midst of scandal? by Wayne Graczyk:
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getsp.pl5?sb20050309wg.htm
■Those of you living near Higashi-Yamatoshi station on the Seibu Haijima line will once again get the opportunity to participate in some cheap activities the next day after every Lions win. The Seibu Big Box Sports & Amusement building just outside Higashi-Yamatoshi station will offer 3 games of bowling for 1,000 yen (shoes included, open-18:00 on weekdays, open-13:00 on weekends and holidays). They will also offer 2 hours of karaoka with free soft drink for 500 yen per person (all day M-Th, open-18:00 on F-Sun and holidays). The indoor tennis court will off e a Dunlop Tennis goods sale where all goods will be 20% off, and the ice-skate center admission fee will be half price. Remember, only the day AFTER the Lions win, and as far as I know, ONLY at the Higashi-Yamatoshi station Big Box.

Softbank Hawks
■Pitcher Hideaki Takahashi got nailed just above his left eye by a baseball during pre-game practice on March 10th, and required 10 stitches to heal the cut. He is listed as day-to-day.
■Softbank announced that popular actress Aya Ueto will throw out the first pitch on Opening Day, March 26th at Fukuoka Yahoo! Dome against the Nippon Ham Fighters.

Nippon Ham Fighters
■After seeing Carlos Mirabals' performance against the Tokyo Giants where he pitched 4 innings of 1 hit shutout ball striking out 5, manager Trey Hillman is pretty much set on using him as the Opening Day pitcher on Mar 26 against Softbank. Veteran Satoru Kanemura will most likely get the home opener start on the 28th against Seibu.
■Manager Trey Hillman went to a local hospital in Sapporo on the 7th, to visit a child who is scheduled to head off to Germany for a heart transplant. Middle school 1st grader Haruki (?) Ishihara (13) and his family are using approximately 90 million yen for travel expenses and operation costs to get the heart transplant in Germany. Hillman presented Ishihara with a Fighters mascot stuffed animal doll and baseball.
■School lifts suspension on Yu Darvish for smoking:
http://asia.news.yahoo.com/050308/kyodo/d88mjj480.html
Image
Yu Darvish bows an apology for everyone he disappointed

■On a related note, the players of the Nippon Ham Fighters will be getting a book entitled Bye Bye Smoking from Gakuji Publications, which explains the harmful effects of smoking. Plus all of the farm team players are not allowed to smoke while in uniform.

Lotte Marines
■The regular season games between Lotte and Softbank on June 28 and 29 that were supposed to be played in Korea will now be played in Chiba Marines Stadium. Papers were giving such reasons as the low popularity of baseball recently in Korea, and lack of ticket sales for moving the games back to Japan.
■Lotte announced that they've locked up Jpop singer Maki Oguro to sing the Japanese National Anthem before the home opener against the Rakuten Golden Eagles on Mar. 26. Maki was really popular in the early to mid 90's, and last year she sang suring the NPB-MLB series.

Orix Buffaloes
■Orix makes business tie-up with Yoshimoto Kogyo:
http://asia.news.yahoo.com/050307/kyodo/d88lve4o0.html
■In an effort to boost fans, and the first result of the tie-up with Yoshimoto Kogyo from the article above, manager Akira Ogi is scheduled to appear on a comedy show based in Osaka, Nanba Gurando Kagetsu, which will air in the Kansai area on the 27th of this month. Other Orix members scheduled to appear are infielder Hirotoshi Kitagawa, outfielders Hiroaki Onishi and Tomotaka Sakaguchi, and pitcher Toyoji Matsumura.
■Manager Akira Ogi paid a visit to Osaka prefectural governor Fusae Ota on the 7th, and presented her with an Orix Buffaloes uniform. The number on the uniform was the same as Ogi's, 70. Ota stated she'd love to see a Nippon Series between Orix and Hanshin in Osaka Dome.
■Orix will have "Tani Seats" at Kobe's Skymark Stadium and Osaka Dome, most likely in the outfield section somewhere near where Yoshitomo Tani plays. Just who will receive free tickets to sit in those seats each game will be determined by a drawing.
■There was a special "Orix Encouragement" party held on the 10th for 1,000 season ticket holders, where the Mayor of Osaka City encouraged people to show up and cheer for the new team.
■During the March 12th game against the Tokyo Giants at Osaka Dome, Orix will invite 100 local youths to watch the Buffaloes pre-game practice sessions, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Great Hanshin Earthquake.

Rakuten Golden Eagles
■I mentioned something about this last year, and now it seems even closer to becoming fact that Rakuten won't be allowing any plastic bats, plastic megaphones, or any other noise makers into Fullcast Stadium Miyagi. It appears that Rakuten is trying to adapt an MLB style cheering atmosphere, which would be the first in NPB. The cheering squad has agreed to allow one big taiko drum into the stadium, but they won't be allowed to use it after 10 PM. Team and player flags that are often waved around during the teams at bat, will be restricted to 3 meters length and 2 meters width, and the flag wavers have been instructed not to obstruct the view of the fans. Reasons given for these actions were, "We want to create an atmosphere where you can hear the actual sounds of baseball." and, "We are taking the nearby hospital into consideration." All of the above conditions were proposed to Rakuten by a citizen's group in Sendai, Miyazaki prefecture, and Rakuten is currently investigating them.

Central League News
Chunichi Dragons
■Pitcher Domingo Guzman is having some discomfort in his pitching shoulder, and will most likely spend most of the remaining Pre-Season at Nagoya Dome rehabilitating. The trainers are confident that he'll be okay in time for Opening Day roster though.

Yakult Swallows
■Catcher Atsuya Furuta won the 42nd Japanese Magazine Publishers Association "Golden Arrow" Sports award, for his work last year as the chairman of the NPB Players Association. Furuta stated, "For the enjoyment of the fans, the parts of baseball that should be changed, will be changed."

Tokyo Giants
■The Giants are now saying that pitcher Hiroshi Kisanuki will be starting the season off with the farm team, until his strained right adductor muscle heals.
■With Thursdays win over the Hiroshima Carp, the Giants have won 7 straight Pre-Season games after dropping the opener to Rakuten. The last time they won 7 straight was in 1982, 23 years ago.

Hanshin Tigers
■Infielder Makoto Imaoka had some swelling in his right knee on the 5th, and when he went to the hospital to have it examined he was diagnosed with inflammation, and will require one to two weeks of rest. Due to this rest period, he is not expected to appear in any Pre-Season games for about 20 days. He isn't expected to miss the season opener against Yakult, but whether or not he'll be 100% is up in the air.
■Outfielder Tomoaki Kanemoto will continue to send 2 lucky Kansai based Tigers fans on an overnight onsen trip to the city of Atsumi in Shizuoka Prefecture every time he hits a home run this year. Including bullet train fare and the cost of an overnight stay, one trip costs roughly 275,000 yen, and last year he hit 34 HR's for a total cost of 8.7 million yen. This year he's aiming for an even higher number of HR's, and has put aside 10 million yen.

Hiroshima Carp
■Catcher Yoshiyuki Ishihara broke the hamate bone in his left hand during the Mar 3rd game against the Softbank Hawks in Yahoo! Dome, and is most likely going to miss the entire first half of the season. He apparently broke the bone on a swing in an at bat of the 3rd inning of the game. The chief trainer for the Carp is guessing 3 months to heal and rehabilitate after surgery, meaning a likely mid-June return.
■Hiroshima has announced that it will be adding Aka-Gojira seats in the right field section, behind where Mr. Aka-Gojira, Shigenobu Shima, plays. Also, they will be giving away 5 pairs of tickets to those seats, so children in middle school or younger can come together with a guardian for free to watch Shima play. (For those of you that don't know, Aka-Gojira means Red-Godzilla, and Shima received that nickname because he wears the same uniform number as Hideki Matsui of the New York Yankees (55), but in the red pinstripes of the Hiroshima Carp.)

Yokohama Baystars
■Before the pre-season home game against the Orix Buffaloes on the 15th, there will be a speed gun contest. The game starts at 13:30, and fans who wish to participate can fill out an entry form starting from 11:30, where 10 lucky fans (only those with infield seats rooting for Yokohama), selected via drawing, will get a chance to take the mound and show off their cannon of an arm.
(*actually, Yokohama is doing this before each pre-season home game, but application times and procedures aren't always the same)

Misc. News/Specials
■--

That's all for this week, the next NEWS report will be up March 18.

Post  RE: 2005 Japanese Baseball
Japan All-Stars top foreign squad in charity event

(Kyodo) Chunichi Dragons infielder Hirokazu Ibata and Yomiuri Giants slugger Kazuhiro Kiyohara both hit RBI doubles as the Japan All-Starteam beat a team of Japan-based foreign players 5-3 in a charity game on Monday. The Japanese players took the early lead after roughing up Hsu Ming-chieh of the Seibu Lions in the opening frame and slowly chipped away at the foreign team pitchers in front of a sparse crowd of 17,628 at Tokyo Dome. "This was a good game and there were no injuries," said Tsutomu Ito, the coach for the Japanese All-Stars, after the game.

Eric Almonte of the Nippon Ham Fighters hit a two-run homer over the left-center wall to cut the deficit in the second, but the foreign players could only produce five hits on the night compared with 11 for the Japanese squad. Hsu was chased after allowing four runs in the first, featuring RBI hits by Ibata, Kiyohara and Hiroshima Carp outfielder Shigenobu Shima. Kenji Jojima of the Softbank Hawks also had a sacrifice fly in the big inning. Yomiuri Giants lefty Hisanori Takahashi gave up two runs in two innings for the win.

Yokohama BayStars right-hander Marc Kroon, formerly of the Colorado Rockies, loaded the bases in the fourth but limited the damage to one run after issuing a free pass to Ibata. Yomiuri Giants slugger Tuffy Rhodes hit a run-scoring single after Yomiuri's Gabe Kapler doubled to leadoff the sixth, but that was as close as the foreign players came to a mounting a rally.

The game was organized to raise money for victims of the Chuetsu earthquake in Niigata Prefecture last October and the Indian Ocean tsunami last December. The total amount raised for the quake victims through the event came to 8.1 million yen. "They brought in 8.1 million yen today. When they have a uniform auction, I hope they can raise over 100 million yen," said Bobby Valentine, the coach for the foreign players.

"Right off the bat, (Norihiro) Akahoshi (from the Hanshin Tigers) stole a base. And there was Almonte's homer, so this was exciting. Today I was as much a fan as a manager," he said. Softbank Hawks' Dominican infielder Tony Batista, formerly of the Montreal Expos, said the charity event was for a great cause and he was happy to help with the donations. "When the Dominican Republic was hit with (torrential) rains (in May last year), the major league players sent a lot of donations," said Batista. "You don't like to see disasters, of course, but I feel like I want give my support in anyway I can if they happen."

Post  RE: 2005 Japanese Baseball
General NPB News
■The NPB will indeed be testing for performance enhancing drugs, and hopes to implement testing as early as this season. The article I read stated that the idea is not written in stone yet, but it was presented to players rep Atsuya Furuta. One part that kind of bothers me about that article, is a quote from the new NPB comissioner Yasuchika Negoro, "I think Japanese players are alright, but there are foreign players as well. It has a relation to the Olympics, and this is a problem we have to grapple with." Why did he have to mention the foreign players? Just because some of them have had MLB playing experience? Doesn't he realize that there are some Japanese players who've returned after playing in MLB? Here's the English article that came out the following day:
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/newse/20050318wo52.htm
(some of the translations are pretty similar, maybe I need to find a job doing this...)
■NPB announced the official slogan for the 2005 season, "Full Swing!". According to Nikkan Sports, the players, coaches, and umpires will wear a small logo patch on their hats. Also, there will be two special balls made, each 2.3 meters in size with the logo imprinted on them, and all 12 managers will write messages on the ball. One ball will debut on March 26th at Seibu Invoice Dome for the Pacific League Season opener, and the other will appear at Osaka Dome on April 1st for the Central League Season opener.

■Speaking of slogans, the Eastern farm league announced its 2005 slogan, "We're waiting for your time. We believe in your time."
■There has been talk this Winter about proposing a "Player exchange" type system, just like an exchange student type of program, where players from NPB would head off to MLB for a certain amount of time. I haven't seen any exact details about this proposal, and whether or not NPB teams are even willing to discuss it, but a representative from the Players Union is headed off to America to meet with MLB officials soon, to look into the "possibility" of such a proposal. Exactly what kind of an effect this will have on NPB is unclear at the moment without further details, but if such a possibility does pop-up somewhere in the future, I'd like to see more small market MLB teams included in the deal, and not just the 2 New York teams. I'm guessing that this idea came about to stave off the large number of NPB players wanting their teams to post them for a shot at MLB, but I'm not so sure it would have the desired effect, as some players might come back with an even stronger desire to return to MLB.

Pacific League News
Seibu Lions
■Slugger Alex Cabrera is getting married again, to a 26 year old Venezualan lady named Adriana Liopo (sp?) The two plan on getting married following the 2005 season in Venezuela, sometime this December. She came together with Alex to Japan on February 19th, and the two are currently living together in Tokyo. When Alex has games at home or near Tokyo, she will most likely be there cheering him on.

■Infielder Jose Fernandez has been diagnosed with the chicken pox, and will be staying home for the next week or so.

Softbank Hawks
■No significant news this week.

Nippon Ham Fighters
■Shinjo is back in the news again, this time he's pledged to help out the victims of the Niigata earthquake and Sumatra tsunami all year long, by stats based incentives. He's already raised close to 5 million yen via his photo exhibition and a donation from the Asahi Shimbun Public Welfare Cultural Affairs Department, but that's only half of the goal he's reaching for. His plan is to add X amount of yen for each outfield assist, or X amount of yen for each walk off hit, Exact details aren't available just yet.
■Catcher Shinji Takahashi mildly sprained his left ankle during the Mar 13 game against Yokohama, and will require at least 10 days to recover. It is unclear or not whether he'll be ready for Opening Day. He also missed out on the Charity game on the 14th.

Lotte Marines
■Pitcher Tomohiro Kuroki will not be ready for Opening Day, as he is still rehabilitating from an injury he sustained to his right elbow last fall. He is currently working out with the farm team, and is expected back on the top roster sometime in mid-Arpil.

Orix Buffaloes
■Orix' Opening Day pitcher might be Hidetaka Kawagoe. He'll get another shot at the job on the 19th against the Giants. So far Kawagoe has started 2 games in the pre-season, and has an ERA of only 2.00. He stated, "This is what I've been practicing for all along."

Rakuten Golden Eagles
■The stadium is just about completed, and will be ready for the home opener on April 1st against the Seibu Lions. Kaijima Construction, the company in charge of rebuilding the old stadium, started a round the clock construction schedule in February, and at one point had as many as 700 people daily working on construction. I haven't seen any pictures yet, but the seats are supposedly crimson red, just like Rakuten's uniform color's. Construction still to come is a roof over the seats behind home plate, and more seats for press and staff, to bring total seating to 28,000. There will be an inaugural tour on the 20th of this month, Rakuten will hold their first practice there on the 23rd and 24th, and 5,000 lucky fans will get the first public look at the stadium on the 27th.
■The Fullcast Stadium Miyagi sign was posted up on the 16th, as seen below. the sign is 3 meters tall by 7 meters wide, and weighs approximately 1 ton. At nighttime, the sign will be lit up by blue light emitting diodes (LED).
Image
That's Miyagee, as in geese, not Miyaji....

■In an effort to boost the inaugural year of the Rakuten Golden Eagles, Rakuten has put up about 2,000 banners around the city of Sendai, encouraging people to come and cheer the team.
Image
"Let's go and cheer on the Rakuten Eagles"

■Rakuten is going to be required to remove part of the company logo on the right sleeve of their uniforms. Currently the logo says "RAKUTEN ICHIBA", but they will have to cut out the ICHIBA part, and just have the Rakuten name and logo. Rakuten Ichiba was deemed too close to an actual advertisement, and with a different advertisement already on their uniforms, the decision was sent to Rakuten from the Pacific League Board of Directors. NPB teams are only allowed to have one advertisement on their jerseys.
■Rakuten becomes a cartoon? The popular weekly cartoon magazine, Weekly Jump, will feature a weekly comic strip about Rakuten, called "Rookie Baseball Club", for 10 weeks, starting with the March 24th issue. For those of you not in Japan, you will be able to view the cartoon via Rakuten's official homepage.

Central League News
Chunichi Dragons
■ No significant news this week.

Yakult Swallows
■From April to September of this year, Alex Ramirez is helping out young handicapped children, by visiting a facility every month during the regular season, and also getting Yakult to back him up by donating at least 100,000 yen every month, with the possibility of more, depending on Ramirez' performance. For examle, for every hit he gets, 5,000 yen will be added to the donated amount, and for every home run he hits, 55,000 yen will be added. Taking his stats from 2004, that would amount to over 500,000 yen per month (roughly $5,000). "I'd like to improve my stats even just a little bit to help out the children." Alex stated.
■Yakult still has no concrete decision as to what they will do with the compensation money they've received for losing the free agent Atsunori Inaba to the Nippon Ham Fighters. There's been talk about acquiring another foreign starting pitcher, since a couple of Yakult's starting pitchers are nursing injuries. Manager Tsutomu Wakamatsu needs to re-assess the team's ability before he can make a final decision.
■Together with the Fuji-Sankei Group and Jingu Stadium, Yakult has announced the "Fill Jingu Stadium" and "Young fans" projects. With a "Beat Park" theme, popular hip-hop artist Zeebra is working on creating some intro songs for Yakult players, and they are expected to be introduced starting with the home opener on April 5th against the Chunichi Dragons. As for the kids, a special "Nation-wide Super Kids Radar-Gun Contest" will be held at Jingu Stadium, where the fastest throwing elementary school kid will get the chance to put up his stuff against third baseman Akinori Iwamura during the annual "Night Festival" series, from August 5-7. Catcher Atsuya Furuta said, "Us players can't do that "Yo Yo Yo!" and "Check i check it out!" type of performance, so all we can do is aim to play better." He also stated that the famous Yakult theme song, Tokyo Ondo will still remain though.

Tokyo Giants
■The Giants are taking a major step towards winning the CL Pennant, by seeking to acquire a Cuban right handed pitcher. Adiel Palma was on the Cuban National Gold Medal team during the 2004 Athens Olympics, and threw 5 shutout innings against Japan then. The Giants hope to have him signed by the end of the month. Adiel is reported to throw in the high 140 kph range (upper 80's mph), with a slider, forkball, and sinker for pitches. For those of you wondering, Article 82, Section 2 of the Baseball Agreement states that a club can have as many foreign players under their control as they wish, but they are only allowed to have 4 on the top level roster, and only 3 of those can appear in the same game. Excluding Tuffy Rhodes who is not required to be on the foreing list due to his lengthy tenure in NPB, the Giants currently have Gabe Kapler, Brian Sikorski, and Dan Micelli on their roster. If they sign Adiel, this would fill their roster limit.
■During the March 15 game against the Seibu Lions at Tokyo Dome, only 14,700 fans attended, setting an all-time worst attendance mark for a single game with the Tokyo Giants. The previous record was on March 23rd, 2003 vs the Daiei Hawks, where only 19,000 people showed up. Tokyo Dome is going on its 18th year holding games in 2005 since opening in 1988.
■Speaking of Tokyo Dome, the new field level seats, or "Excite Seats" as they are known, made their debut in the March 15th game. There are a total of 228 seats (I'm assuming 114 on each side). The fence in front of the seating is only 110 cm tall (about 3.5 feet). The article had no mention, but from what the picture shows, and what I saw on TV, it appears as if each seat has a glove handy for people who want to try and snag baseballs or protect themselves from lase beam line drives.
Image
A couple of youngsters try out the new field level seating

■The Giants have announced that popular figure skater Mika Ando will throw out the first pitch on Opening Day at Tokyo Dome on April 1, against the Hiroshima Carp. "I'll do my best to throw a strike." she stated.

Hanshin Tigers
■Before the March 13th game against the Giants at Koushien Stadium, the Hanshin cheering club handed out over 2,500 cards with the new cheering songs for the new players that joined the Tigers this year. Before the game started they practiced with the fans who showed up to brave the single digit snow flutter weather,
■Pitcher Takehito Kanazawa underwent surgery on his right elbow on the 17th, after complaining about discomfort during Spring Training camp. When he will return was not mentioned.

Hiroshima Carp
■The Hiroshima Carp brought in a Labrador Retriever to deliver fresh baseballs to the homeplate umpire for tryouts during the Mar 12th game against Softbank, and apparantly the crowd loved Mickey. After the 3rd inning ended, the home plate umpire signaled for the dog to come, and Mickey carried a basket with 3 baseballs to the umpire. Mickey also came out in the 5th inning to deliver 3 more balls. The Hiroshima owner liked the concept enough to hint at using Mickey sometimes during the regular season as well.
Image
Mickey the ball dog delivers to the home plate umpire. Looks like I'm out of a job.

■The Hiroshima Carp re-signed pitcher Tom Davey to a one-year deal, after he left the club last season due to a shoulder injury. Davey will receive 150,000 dollars plus incentives. The club was testing him since February.
■On March 28th, fans will be able to come to Hiroshima Municipal Stadium and watch the Carp practice. Practice starts from 10:30 AM, and after the practice, some of the Carp players will be tossing signed balls into the crowds.

Yokohama Baystars
■Ninth round draft pick pitcher Takahiro Matsuka will have to wait to become the 5th player from the prestigous Tokyo University to play in NPB, as he's 4 credits short of graduating. Out of the 88 credits needed to graduate, he fell 4 short, or 1 class. He says he's aiming for a September graduation now, meaning he won't have a shot at the top level until next year.

Misc. News/Specials
■Acceptance of foreign managers reflects yet another change in Japanese baseball, by Wayne Graczyk:
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getsp.pl5?sb20050313wg.htm

That's all for this week, the next NEWS report will be up March 25.

Post  RE: 2005 Japanese Baseball
Billy, can you help me out with schedules?

As I mentioned before I want to try to get to the Giants game on Saturday April 9. But the one source I have for a schedule still lists no time:

Yomiuri Giants Schedule for 2005

Do you have another source for schedules that shows a game time? If not, do you think it'll be a day game or night game? If it's a night game I'm going to have to find another option.

I gotta think the full schedules with times is out, it's just that this site isn't updated.

Thanks,

Pablo

Post  RE: 2005 Japanese Baseball
I didn't even notice that most of the sites don't have times listed yet. As a rule of thumb, all game times on weekdays generally start at 18:00, or shortly after (holidays excluded). The Giants also play almost all of their games starting certain Sundays they'll start at 17:00 to try and get more kids to come to the park. I checked a few other sites in English and no times were listed, even the Giants homepage didn't have all the times listed. But, if you check out Yahoo! Japan all the times are listed. Granted it's in Japanese, but you should still be able to match the date on the left with the times on the right side of the page, and then coordinate those with the link you've got to find out where they play.

Tokyo Giants Schedule, April:
4/7 vs Yokohama Baystars, Yokohama Stadium, starting at 18:00
4/8 vs Chunichi Dragons, Tokyo Dome, starting at 18:00
4/9 vs Chunichi Dragons, Tokyo Dome, starting at 18:00
4/10 vs Chunichi Dragons, Tokyo Dome, starting at 17:00

Yakult Swallows Schedule, April
4/7 vs Chunichi Dragons, Jingu Stadium, 18:00
they leave town on the 8th

Chiba Lotte Marines Schedule, April
4/8 vs Nippon Ham Fighters, Chiba Marine Stadium, 18:15
4/9 vs Nippon Ham Fighters, Chiba Marine Stadium, 13:00
4/10 vs Nippon Ham Fighters, Chiba Marine Stadium, 13:00

Yokohama leaves town after playing the Giants on the 7th, and Seibu is out of town the weekend you are here.

Thanks Billy. That sucks though. As much as I want to see a game I'm not sure I want to spend one of my two nights in Tokyo watching a game. 6PM isn't bad though, maybe I'll catch a few innings and then go out or make the trip out to Chiba Lotte in the afternoon. If I remember right Japanese games tend to go longer than MLB games.

How is Chiba's stadium? Is it nice? Or is it like the Dome or Yokohama and Jinju (the only 3 places I've been)?

I haven't made the trip out to Chiba yet for a game, but from what I've heard it can get really windy, and is like the old generic round MLB ballparks from the 70's (Pittsburgh, Cincinnati.....) For the most part, Japanese stadiums are far behind America's. Many stadiums still have artificial turf, retractable roofs like that of Arizona and Seattle haven't made it to Japan yet (which is why there's so many rainouts), replays in the stadium don't show much (probably to protect the umpires), and I haven't seen much for fan interaction such as bloopers clips or trivia questions in-between innings. (at Jingu mostly commercials are played in-between innings)

But don't forget, baseball is still baseball wherever you go.

you got that right. I actually like the japanese brand of baseball better, with strategy and moving runners over and playing for a run here and there. To me it beats what MLB has now with everyone waiting for the 3 run homer.

I've been to Yokohama (several times), Jinju and the Tokyo Dome. I'd classify all 3 as like US 1960s/70s era stadiums as you described. The things I disliked were the huge distance the stands are from the field (more foul ground than even Oakland) and the annoying 40 foot fence from foul pole to foul pole.

As I mentioned I think in another thread, it's not all bad. I love the beer girls!

I'm a San Diego season ticket holder and did a stadium tour with some friends this weekend and there were 3 Japanese guys in the group. So I was chatting with the one guy who spoke some english and he was amazed at Petco Park. It's brand new (last season was the first) and totally state of the art, and I know there's nothing like it in Japan. His buddy was taking a ton of notes, maybe he was writing a story. They were from Fukuoka and were pretty impressed (actually shocked) when I asked him how the Hawks were going to do this year. I got that right didn't I? I see it's "Softbank" Hawks now, whatever that is!
