I would like a thread of index numbers and kanji keywords that you keep getting mixed up. So when I review I run into them and I know Im about to answer one or the other wrong. So I try to line up all the kanji keywords I can possibly mistake them for. It helps recalling the proper kanji. Feel free to add key word pairs that gives you grief. And tips on how to avoid it Like me who replaced Presents with gift. It helped.

All these confusions between similar words will start to clear up when you finish Heisig and start applying what you've learned to actual vocabulary. If you've got all of Heisig down except for comfusing these pairs, don't even worry about it. Just start using real Japanese and you will be able t tell them apart.

While doing bk one continue concentrating on the stories and what makes them mix up in your head and try to untangle them and review them extra, more than others. It will help you keep them straight and will also help you with your new stories you are making- you will realize what a good and bad story are, and how to review well. When you finish bk 1 continue to review intensively for a little while so you can solidify what you've done. Then start bk 2, and let things go from there. Once you've finished the course, and start reading, as KD said, a few messed up stories won't matter. You'll forget some you had down pat and hard ones will become easy, depending on what you read. But until you finish keep fighting and never let your guard down.

Slide, more reviewing is the slippery slope. Its trying to commit to my mind by rote memorization what won't stick by my ingenious study. The real kicker here is that if I am presented with all the keywords I get mixed up at one time, I can meticulously draw each and then I get it. I'd rather do this. Im always checking my stories for better ones, but sometimes I just CANT come up with better ones no matter what I try. So I have to work with bad ones. And just reviewing them over and over isn't solving the problem. A list of similiar keywords don't solve that either, but if they help me to plot out the difficult kanji by using my head to think hard, I hope something is gained from it.



Perhaps I forgot to add my ya ya nado particles. The list is inconclusive, they were just the pairs I ran into during my last kanji review. I prefer to work with my "hard ones" now, not in a couple of months, however I know it helps once words get attached to them, I noticed that with former "hard ones" like narau (learn). Untill I started using that word in my japanese study it was hard to get to stick. Now I remember it effortlessly. So of course I am not going to stop here because I can't get these kanjis to stick. I plow through the ice floes at a steady speed of 10-20 kpd (kanji per day). Im getting better at making the stories stick fast so its feeling good! Getting better at this. And reading japanese text turns more and more rewarding, since fewer and fewer elements are alien to me.

Oh, there's the 10000-20000 word vocabulary deficiency but Ill hafta cope with that later ^^

i found that reviewing all the similar kanji at once was a great way to remind yourself of their
differences, and prevent your mind from dumping them in the same category.

I actually made a index of kanji that i thought were relatively similar, I could post that for you
if youre interested.

I have mentioned this before, and maybe you already thought of it yourself,
but I studied with a kanji-English dictionary (Nelson's), and the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary next to me. When I would need help thinking of a story I would look up the kanji or the English keyword and see if anything didn't give me an idea.

The "Shorter" OED is only shorter than the 19 volume whole thing, and is longer than average college OEDs. It has word histories, meaning-supporting quotes from historical literature, and then lists of expressions that the word is in. It is a Heisig-story-makers's treasure trove. All kinds of little tidbits that stimulated my imagination when stumped.

Anyway, don't worry about them too much. Give the ones you can't remember their 5 or 15 minutes and then get on with other stuff.

My favorite trick was to use common expressions as mnemonic aids :

"You will PAY for this!"

"I don't BUY into that!"

The CEREMONY of tea...

You atTUNE yourself to a TUNE, or TUNE into a TUNE on the radio..

rhyme -> Busta RHYME (rapper) makes RHYMEs

"Oh man this thing is so cheap, It's a STEAL !"

Or playing with people names :

Carl FOGarty drives a Ducati in the FOG ?

DEW Barrymore

etc



-- AS slide has posted several times before, looking up the definitions also on dictionary.com can help to distinguish those similar keywords. Try to get the particular flavor of each keyword.



In this case, if you stick to Heisig's choice of keywords, one is to be taken as the seat itself, an object onto which you can sit. While the other would be remembered as the verb, the action to sit down. This helps you dstinguihs the kanjis as you learn them. You could say that the "sit" kanji also refers to a "seat" but we're not concerned about the various meanings of the kanji at that point in RTK Volume 1, you just want to make sure to distinguish them all in memory, each in its own little distinct brain cell
