If I remember correctly, I was once explained during Japanese class
that this was mostly due to the chemicals they used to use when dying
their hair.

Never heard of 'the blue rinse set'? This is the name given to older folk, women to be precise, who have had their hair dyed blue to cover the grey. At least this a term popualr in Australia. Barry Humphries' Edna Everage character (also from my hometown of Melbourne) is a blue rinser.

It is a term used in the UK also.

Example below from the UK TV soap Coronation Street! Played the character of a randy granny!

purple is due to bad color.
it's like using black dyed on white hair that are not that able to keep colour.. so purple come's out.

what is strange is the Blonde hairs old people get!
hairs are too white so they start being yellow/blonde [:-]

Actually, I believe Yumiyoshi has the reason why it's purple. From what I was told years ago, that's why they went with purple.

If they used light blue, the yellow might turn green, thus purple it is.
